Services
IRS letters / notices
Initial review of an IRS notice, response deadlines, required documents, and possible next steps.
Who this service is for
For clients who received an IRS letter or notice and need to understand which return or issue it concerns, what the IRS is asking for, and whether a response deadline applies. A notice should not be evaluated only by its heading or by an amount shown on the first page.
Common situations
- The IRS asks for support or clarification of an item on the return.
- The notice proposes a change to income, a credit, or another reported amount.
- The client is unsure whether a response is needed or what documents to gather.
- A follow-up notice arrives about an issue that was already discussed with the IRS.
What to prepare
- A complete copy of the IRS notice, including all pages and attachments.
- The tax return for the year referenced in the notice.
- Income forms and other records connected with the issue described in the letter.
- Earlier correspondence with the IRS about the same matter, if any.
What we review
We read the notice in full, identify the tax year and issue, and compare it with the filed return and the client’s records. That makes it possible to identify what information is missing and what next step is practical.
Some notices require only a review or clarification, while others may require supporting documents or a separate response. The specific content and deadline of the notice matter more than the general notice category.
Helpful resources
What to prepare
A list of documents and supporting records for credits, dependents, mileage, expenses, and foreign items.
How it works
Four steps from initial contact to filing: we first understand the situation, then identify the documents, receive them securely, and review the result with you.
Documents are transmitted only through a secure method after the initial contact.
Common questions
Can I contact you about an IRS letter?
Yes. You can start with an initial review of the IRS notice. We will look at what is being requested, the response deadlines, and which documents may be needed. If the issue is outside the scope of an initial review or requires separate professional representation, we will say that in advance.
Can we start if not all documents are ready yet?
Yes. You can start by describing the situation, but preparation and filing require complete documents and support for income, deductions, and credits.
Why should SSN and tax documents not be sent by regular email?
SSN, W-2, 1099, ID, and tax documents contain sensitive data. These files should be transmitted through a secure method after the initial contact.
What affects the price?
Forms, states, income sources, Schedule C activity, foreign income, foreign accounts, and any additional explanations required.
