Self-employment / 1099 tax preparation

Self-employment income, business expenses, and organized reporting of income and costs.

Who this service is for

For freelancers, independent contractors, and small self-employed businesses that receive 1099 forms or have business income even when no separate 1099 was issued. It also applies when a client has both a W-2 job and a separate self-employment activity.

Common situations

  • Independent contractor work reported on Form 1099-NEC.
  • Platform or payment-processor income reported on Form 1099-K.
  • Freelance or small business income without a separate tax form for every payment.
  • A W-2 job combined with additional self-employment income.

What to prepare

  • 1099-NEC, 1099-K, and other forms connected with the business activity.
  • A summary of business income, including payments for which no separate tax form was issued.
  • Records of business expenses such as supplies, software, services, insurance, and other costs related to the activity.
  • A business mileage log and vehicle records if a vehicle was used for the activity.
  • Information about estimated tax payments made during the year, if any.

What we review

Income and expenses are organized so Schedule C reflects the actual business activity rather than a simple list of bank transactions. We also look at mixed personal and business expenses and at the records available to support amounts reported on the return.

Helpful resources

W-2, 1099, and Schedule C: what is the difference?

These forms may look similar to a client, but they represent different types of income and require different tax treatment.

Mileage log and business use of a car

If a vehicle is used for work or business, records should be kept during the year. Rough mileage and expense estimates are often not enough.

Estimated tax payments during the year

If income is not subject to withholding, such as 1099 / self-employed income, rent, interest, or dividends, estimated tax payments may need to be discussed.

Home office for self-employed taxpayers: what to document

Working from home does not automatically create a deduction. A self-employed taxpayer must determine whether the space meets business-use-of-home rules and which calculation method is appropriate.

Cryptocurrency and other digital assets: records to prepare

Transactions involving cryptocurrency, stablecoins, and other digital assets can create taxable income or capital gain or loss. Tax preparation often requires transaction history, not just year-end totals.

How it works

Common questions

Do you work with 1099 income / Schedule C clients?

Yes. Schedule C requires income records, categorized expenses, and supporting documents such as mileage, supplies, software, insurance, home office, and other costs.

Can W-2 and 1099 income be filed together?

Yes. W-2, 1099, and other income forms are reported within one individual return when they belong to the same taxpayer.

What if a 1099 or another form has not arrived yet?

We first check whether the form is expected and what income records are available. Before filing, the data should be complete to avoid missing income or amending later.

What affects the price?

Forms, states, income sources, Schedule C activity, foreign income, foreign accounts, and any additional explanations required.

Should I keep documents after filing?

Yes. Keep a copy of the return and supporting records for income, deductions, credits, children, business activity, foreign accounts, and IRS letters.
